What is transmission oil used for?

The main task of transmission oil is to lubricate and cool. But the ability to do this differs between different transmission oils. Therefore, they are divided into the three classes in the API classification:

• GL-1 for lightly loaded planetary gears and gear sets
• GL-4 for lightly loaded hypoid gears. Front-wheel drive vehicles with a joint differential and transmission often use GL-4
• Gl-5 for rear axles with heavily loaded hypoid gears.
