Buying guide – Lubricants for your vehicle

Lubricants are there to reduce friction between the moving parts in your car and to protect the treated surfaces from moisture and corrosion. There are many parts in your car that need to be lubricated in order to work smoothly and be protected from corrosion.

The parts of your car that may need to be lubricated include its wheel bearings, chassis parts, ball joints and universal joints.

Hinges in doors and bonnets are also important to check and lubricate with grease in order to keep them in good condition and free from squeaks.

Which lubricant should you buy?

There are a variety of lubricants for your car, with different uses and benefits. So, which lubricant should you buy?

Oils

Oils are most often used when lubricating, for example, gears, chains, friction/sliding bearings, and compressors, as well as in hydraulic systems. Oils are used in places where the temperature can be high and/or on components exposed to high speeds and friction. Oils also have a good wetting ability, which positively affects the lubricating effect.

Grease

Greases have a thicker consistency than the oils and are used to lubricate roller and friction bearings, ball bearings, sliding bearings, valves, chains, gearboxes, spindles and seals, among other things. Thanks to the thick consistency of the greases, the lubricant stays on the car part you have lubricated, resulting in protection against friction and wear. The grease also protects the lubricated part against, among other things, moisture and chemicals.

Fats are composed of a base oil and a thickening agent. Depending on what you are going to lubricate, you will find various greases, with different base oils, thickeners and application methods.

Pastes

Pastes should be used when assembling and disassembling threaded parts, seals and flanges. A ceramic paste protects against galling, corrosion and seizing. Paste can also prevent noise and vibration in disc brakes. The big difference between a paste and a grease is that pastes contain a higher proportion of solid lubricants, which gives the paste a good lubricating ability and good protection at high temperatures. A paste is also useful in high-stress applications and effectively protects against corrosion and rusting.

Maintaining your car in winter

Before the freezing temperatures and snow of winter, it can be a good idea to lubricate all locks with lock oil and to apply silicone to the rubber trim around the doors and boot. The silicone on the trims prevents them freezing to the metal and therefore you avoid having frozen doors.
