6 tips on how to start exercising

Most people know that exercise is good for the body and mind. In addition, most want a workout routine with at least a few sessions every week. Unfortunately, things often prevent this: lack of time, tiredness, illness, or injuries. Exercise is not only for those hoping to lose weight or get in shape for a marathon. Moving around benefits everyone, for a number of reasons. Here at Biltema we want to inspire you to lead a more active life and get exercising – not least of all because it’s fun!

Fun exercise that gives you joy and energy is key

No matter the reason you want to exercise – to feel good, to be healthy, to be stronger or faster, or to lose weight – you should prioritise exercising at least once or twice a week. Above all, you need to enjoy it and have fun; otherwise, you will grow bored with it quickly.

We have put together 6 tips on how to help you start exercising without injuring yourself or losing motivation.

  1. Set exercise goals

To accomplish something, it is important to set goals. What is most important to you? Adapt your exercise according to your goals.

  2. Create an exercise schedule

A common obstacle when starting to exercise is actually to start, and achieving lasting change requires a little planning. Do not work out too hard in the beginning – unless you enjoy the taste of blood in your mouth. Calm, brief workouts are also effective. The best method is a combination of everything – variation is fun!

  3. Try out different forms of exercise to find those that suits you

It is essential to choose a form of exercise that you find fun and that gives you energy and joy, otherwise you will soon get bored. Maybe it is spinning or strength training that suits you best. Maybe it is a brisk walk or run in the evening after work. Try out different things and then continue with the ones you enjoy.

  4. Think about clothing – spend money on the right material

Even though the look of the clothing does not make a difference, it is important that the clothes are made of the right materials. Having good, breathable clothes, that handle moisture can improve your exercise.

  5. Begin slowly and switch exercise forms for a good start

One of the most common mistakes when people start exercising is that they work out too hard in the beginning, which may result in injury and prevent further exercise.

A good idea is to switch between jogging and walking in the beginning, and later increase your pace as you build strength and get fitter. Also, exercise on different terrain and surfaces when you go for a run, such as forests, lighter terrain, grass, or pavement, to prevent injury and excessive stress and strain.

  6. Get out often, but don’t get delusions of grandeur

It is up to you whether you want to be out for 20 minutes or one hour. The most important thing is that you get out and take your time. The best thing is to get out often so that you can build up your strength and stamina and feel the energy flowing through your body.
